Travel

Our task was to Choose a destination around the world where we desired to travel.  Next we had to do research and collect pictures and information about our place of choice.

From these sketches I came up with my final drawing to put on my poster and painting.  My poster uses my artwork as an advertisement to visit Chicago and attracts visitors because of the desire in the image.

Then using the same location, I created a painting with the same main concept as my travel poster.  Both include the famous Sears Tower in Chicago. My painting shows the original concept as a bill board on the Tower.

Color Studies

We were asked to produce a Ritcher meets Albers Gradient.  For this assignment we had to cut out pieces of paper and place them in the correct gray scale order to form a gradient.  In this study we learned that colors may not be the exact color they appear to be.

Next we created a color wheel.  This assignment further enhanced our knowledge of color and forced us to learn how to create the different colors within the color wheel using the primary and secondary colors.

Figure Drawings

These figure drawings ranged from 5 to 10 minutes and were all done in Charcoal.  They helped form and understanding of the human body and it's proportions.  These drawings were very useful when we were creating our garments because I had then developed a further understanding of the human figure.

Fashion Design

On our trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art we were asked to study a room from the 18th century and focus on pieces of the room that most stood out to us.  These significant items' main purpose was to give us inspiration for the garment we would be creating.

From this Cabris Room I found inspiration from the mirror, bookcase, clock, and curtains. Ultimately, I decided to focus on the clock and the bookcase because I found that the clock had a very interesting texture and shape. I thought that the bookcase would translate well to a garment and add a different feel to the project.
From the concept sketches, I drew sketches of the 3D project I would ultimately create.

Then I took my model to the streets of New York City for some interesting scenery to add to my photo shoot.

The body of my dress is made entirely from plastic bags which have been pulled together to create the texture that is shown.  This texture is inspired by the unique details of the clock.  The trim is made from newspaper which has been folded to form the ruffles on the top and waist.  This newspaper trim was inspired by the books in the bookcase.  In my opinion, newsprint is a modern version of books similar to the ones in the bookcase. This skirt and top truly embody the items found in the Cabris Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Product Design

The task was to create 6 concepts of a travel item and then develop those concepts to create one final prototype.  Originally we thought of the idea of an underwater arm band which could be used to take pictures and hold other important items while being involved in underwater activity.  Our concept then evolved into a head band, backpack, and then finally a belt.  The belt was the most practical and efficient and allows for anyone to swim without feeling burdened by the weight of a camera.
